4 medium oranges
7 licorice candy drops
1-1 1/2 quarts lime sherbet
4 maraschino cherries with stems
With sharp knife, cut off thin slice of peel from bottom end of each orange to make it stand firmly. For hat, cut off thick slice, about ½ to 1/3 way down from top of each orange.
With spoon, scoop out pulp and white membrane from rest of orange (use in fruit cup or salad). Make a face on the skin of each orange by using licorice drops for the eyes, 1 whole clove for the nose and a line of cloves for a smiling mouth.
Fill orange shells with sherbet, mounding it above the rim. Place hats atop sherbet at jaunty angle. With toothpick, stick maraschino cherry in top of hat, anchoring ends of toothpicks in the sherbet. Place in freezer until serving time.
